From Chatbots to Decision Engines
Several Columbus businesses have graduated from pilot-stage AI assistants to what industry insiders call "decision engines", systems that don't just answer questions but recommend actions. One local logistics firm, operating out of a warehouse complex near the Rickenbacker International Airport, has begun testing a model that ingests global shipping data, weather reports and political-risk feeds to recommend alternate freight routes hours before a disruption becomes public.
The system, still in beta with a small group of clients, is designed to flag risks like the Strait of Hormuz closure, which as of this week has halted a significant portion of global oil tanker traffic, and automatically suggest rerouting through the Suez Canal or alternative rail links. The firm declined to name the specific AI vendor but said it expects to roll the tool to all customers by Q1 2027.
Retailers along the Polaris corridor are pursuing similar upgrades. Multiple store chains have told suppliers they plan to replace legacy demand-forecasting spreadsheets with machine-learning models that can incorporate real-time foot traffic, social-media sentiment and even local weather data. The goal: reduce overstock and out-of-stock scenarios, which cost the industry billions annually.
What's Next: Regulation and Talent
The biggest uncertainty isn't technical, it's regulatory. Ohio has no comprehensive AI law on the books, but several city council members have signaled interest in crafting rules around algorithmic transparency and bias. A working group convened by the Columbus Chamber of Commerce is expected to release recommendations this fall, focusing on disclosure requirements for AI systems used in hiring, lending and housing.
Meanwhile, the talent pipeline is tightening. Columbus-based Ohio State University has seen a 40% enrollment increase in its AI and machine-learning certificate programs over the past year, according to university figures shared with local media. But graduates are being snapped up quickly, often by out-of-state tech giants offering remote salaries that local businesses struggle to match.
For now, the most concrete roadmap items are incremental: better inventory models, smarter routing algorithms and more natural customer-service bots. But several executives told The Daily Columbus they expect a breakthrough in the next 12 to 18 months, something that moves AI from a cost-saving tool to a revenue driver.
